Limkokwing University Launches World’s Biggest High School Debate Championship

Just a quick sharing on this piece of news I received recently. With a participation list of over 200 teams from across the nation Limkokwing University is set to launch the biggest debate ever organized for high school students. Chief Adjudicator Don Siron Pereira said this was the first time a debate of this magnitude was organized for high schools and this included the impressive amount of prizes allotted for both participants and winners.

In total the prizes that include scholarships and cash amount to RM2.5 million, considered the highest a university has invested to encourage debates. University President Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Limkokwing said this was to inspire more students to brush up their skills in oratory and debate to participate.

Limkokwing University has introduced this international debate championship to provide an avenue for students to build their skills in thinking in a structured manner and speaking with confidence. Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak commended the university for providing this opportunity to Malaysian youths to build their skills.

The format used is based on the British Parliamentary Style of debate. The best team will get an all-expenses paid trip to London where they will get a chance to spend a month at the University’s London campus. The top team will also receive a cash prize of RM10,000 and full scholarships tenable at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya for their choice of programme.

All participating teams will receive a 50 per cent rebate in tuition fees for the first year if they register to complete their studies at the university. An independent international panel of experienced adjudicators will manage the debate process. They will also share their experiences and tips with the debaters at the end of the competition.
